Online Archives and Reseach Opportunities
Many Irish libraries now offer online catalogs
and searchable archives, some including complete documents, to
help facilitate reasearch in Irish history,
culture, and literature. Many of the links provided below are
internally
linked as well, allowing the user to navigate
across libraries and archives with relative ease. Additional links and
link descriptions will be updated as more
materials become available online.
Public Record Office of Northern
Ireland
PRONI's stated aims are to identify, preserve and make available
Northern Ireland's unique archival heritage and
community memory. Materials include historical
documents, geneaological records, and materials pertinent to
Northern Ireland and the UK.
National Library of
Ireland
The National Library of
Ireland’s holdings represent the most
comprehensive collection of Irish documentary
material in the world.The website has recently
been improved for better user interface and includes descriptions of
print, manuscript, and digital collections as
well as a detailed, searchable catalog.
National Archives-Ireland
The official archive of papers relating to the
operation, evolution and origins of the modern Irish state and its
government, including abstracts and
transcripts of documents dating back to the 13th century whose
originals
were destroyed in 1922 during the Irish Civil
War.
Royal
Irish Academy
The Royal Irish Academy in Dublin possesses
the largest corpus of Irish language manuscripts in the world.
The
searchable online catalog features early
books, pamphlets, and manuscript materials, as well as Irish
publications
and scholarly materials not readily available
elsewhere.
Queen's
University Belfast-Special Collections
The Special Collections Library at Queen's
University Belfast focuses on incanubula, manuscripts, and materials
from the 16th through the 19th centuries, but
also includes modern materials relating to Ulster as well.
Linen Hall
Library, Belfast
Linden Hall Library
is the oldest library in Belfast and the last subscribing library in
Ireland. The library prides itself
on its Irish and Local Studies collections,
including extensive holdings of early books relating to or printed in
Belfast and Ulster. The 250,000 item Northern
irish Political Collection is the definitive archive for materials
related
to "the Troubles."
Robinson
Library, Armagh
Founded in 1771 by Archbishop Richard
Robinson, the Armagh Public Library is a reference-only library which
has
expanded from the nucleus of Archbishop Robinson's
own library of 17th and 18th century books on theology,
philosophy,
classic and modern literature, voyages and travels, history, medicine
and law. In addition to printed
works, the library has extensive manuscript
holdings, including holographic materials by Swift, the English
compilation of the Annals of
Clonmacnoise by Connell McGeoghegan, 1627 and the Armagh Corporation
Books,
1731 to 1840. Other materials cataloged by the
library include artifacts of Irish life and culture, including the
Silver
Maces presented to Armagh when it became a
city for
the first time in 1656 and the only foreign flag ever
captured on the
island of Ireland.
Searchable online
catalog is not yet comprehensive, but is easy to use and
reflects the focus of the library.

and society)

Society, including information about their journal, affiliations, and

Studies
The journal focuses on Irish language and
cultural studies, with particular emphasis on philology,
palaeography, metrics and grammar. While the
journal itself is not searchable online, the site does provide an
index of recent work published in the journal
and ordering information for specific volumes or articles.
Royal Historical Society
Bibliography
Complete
bibliography of historical sources and scholarship concerning Irish
history from the Roman period
to the present day. Includes more than 450,000
entries that are cross-indexed with other bibliographies and
archives. Excellent resource for finding
sources and tracing discussions in the field.
Irish Migration Studies
in Latin
America
Journal focusing on the migration of
Irish immigrants to Latin America. Individual issues and articles
are
available through the site in PDF format and
the site itself is easy to navigate.
Irish Local
History Journals
Index of archaeological and historical journals
focused on Ireland in general and many dedicated to local
history and archaeology. Many of the
annotations include links to individual journal's websites, indexes of
past
content, and concordances to help with
research.
